As part of events marking his one year in office, Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area (LGA), Hon. James Aforyagha James, has gifted some residents with fibre boats and different types of fishing gear, including nets.
He also presented some brand new motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, to some other residents of the area to help them with their transportation businesses.
According to the Chairman, the gesture is targeted at not only empowering the people, especially the fishing population among the citizens, but also to get everyone meaningfully and economically engaged to create the ambience and conducive environment for the Local Government Area to continue to enjoy the peace and security for which it is known.
Doing the presentation of the empowerment items to the beneficiaries on behalf of the council were Hon. Michael Donald Igolima, a former Caretaker Chairman of the area, and Hon. Enyiada Cookey-Gam, immediate past Chairman of the Council.
In their different speeches, they described the gesture as a commendable feat that marks responsiveness in governance and leadership, which will ultimately engender the economic well-being of residents of the area.
The two former Council Chairmen, who are political leaders, encouraged the beneficiaries to put the items so received into proper use and never see the items as a political reward that would be handled carelessly.
They also encouraged the beneficiaries to make maximum use of the items to improve their lives and to impact their individual families and communities, saying that the gesture will look misplaced if they do not show positive impact in the communities as a result of the items they have received.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Emmanuel Owen, expressed the gratitude of the beneficiaries to the Chairman of Council for the gesture, and promised to fully utilise the items to improve their lives economically, and ultimately impact their communities.
Other activities lined up as part of the anniversary are billed to continue.
