Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area (LGA) on Tuesday flagged-off the 2025 edition of the World Reproductive Health and Contraceptive Day at the Nkoro Chiefs’ Council Hall, Nkoro Town.

Performing the flag-off ceremony, the wife of the Executive Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro LGA, Barr. Lydia James, accompanied by the Vice Chairman of the Council, Hon. Gladys Daniel Legg-Jack, stated that the initiative aims to improve reproductive health, reduce maternal and infant mortality, and empower women through access to accurate health information.

Mrs. James emphasized that reproductive health is a critical part of overall well-being, especially for women of childbearing age.

She noted that modern contraception is not merely a tool for limiting births, but a means of spacing pregnancies, reducing high-risk deliveries, and protecting the health of both mothers and infants.

She commended the Chairman, Barr. James A. James, for prioritizing public health and supporting life-saving initiatives.

“When mothers are informed about the range of contraceptive options available, they are better equipped to make safe and healthy choices, ensuring full recovery after childbirth and the wellbeing of their babies”, she stated.

In her remarks, Vice Chairman, Hon. Mrs. Gladys Daniel LeggJack, thanked all stakeholders who supported the administration of Barr. James, and urged women to pay close attention to the sensitization messages delivered by health professionals.

She said, “To give birth safely and remain alive and healthy, that is the true meaning of motherhood.”

A representiove of the Nkoro Council of Chiefs, Alabo Richard Harrison Nyako, drew comparisons between traditional birth attendants and modern healthcare providers.

He encouraged women to make reproductive health a priority by seeking professional antenatal and postnatal care, saying, “It’s time every woman embraces modern reproductive health practices for her safety and that of her child.”

Delivering the technical message at the event, the Deputy Primary Health Care Coordinator and Reproductive Health Officer for Opobo/Nkoro LGA, Ms. Daribelegha Wilcox, highlighted the effectiveness of contraception and postnatal care in reducing cases of postpartum haemorrhage, anaemia, obstetric fistula, and infant mortality.

She stressed the importance of adequate inter-pregnancy intervals to help restore maternal iron levels and improve neonatal outcomes, steps which, she noted, could significantly reduce preventable maternal and child deaths.

Highlights of the event included the official flag-off, community sensitization sessions, presentation of awards, and recognition of individuals who have contributed to reproductive health advocacy in the area.

The event was well-attended by women from various communities across Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.
