The Chairman of Okrika Local Government Area (LGA), Hon. Akuro Tobin, has been honoured with the Best Human Capital Development Award in recognition of his purposeful leadership and people-oriented development initiatives during his first year in office.
The award was presented to the chairman by the organisers of the Port Harcourt Magazine Awards (PHMA) during the sixth edition of the awards ceremony, held at the Ark Event Centre in Port Harcourt, with the theme, “Trado Now.”
Speaking at the occasion, Hon. Tobin expressed appreciation to the organisers for finding him worthy of the honour.
He said, “The best thing any leader who truly wants to develop and impact his people would do is to show them how to fish and not just give them fish.”
He noted that nobody is born a politician, adding that his experience in public service had taught him valuable lessons along the way.
He dedicated the award to his leader and mentor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Hon. Nyesom Wike, and the people of Okrika, whom he thanked for giving him their mandate.
The Convener of PHMA, Kendrick Christian, also appreciated those in attendance and emphasised the importance of collective support and development in Port Harcourt.
He described Port Harcourt as a “city of refuge,” adding that the city should remain a place where people come together to support one another.
Christian further noted that Port Harcourt was making progress not merely through words or the number of social media posts, but through tangible actions and achievements.
Other award recipients at the event included the Chairman of Khana LGA, Dr. Thomas Bariere, who received the Local Government Chairman of the Year Award for Security.
Okrika Grammar School was honoured as the Most Innovative Public School, while Hon. Ruth Nweke of Omuma LGA received the Best Councillor of the Year Award.
A centenarian and founding member of the late Cardinal Jim Rex Lawson Highlife Music Band, Papa Tony Odili, was also honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The ceremony featured cultural performances, including traditional dances by the Dynamic Dancers of Okrika.
The event was attended by fashion designers, actors, politicians, and other personalities from the arts and creative industry.
