The Head of Service consoling some members of the family.

The Rivers State Government has assured the family of Mr. Peter Ekpo of its support over the demise of his son and grandson as a result of heavy flooding in Eliogbolo Community recently.

Deputy Governor of the State, Professor Ngozi Nma Ordu, gave the assurance when she paid a condolence visit on the family of the deceased children in Eliogbolo Community, Port Harcourt.

Professor Ordu assured the family that the State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, is concerned about their plight and will do the needful to assuage their sufferings.

Odu, who was represented by the Head of Service, Rivers State, Dr. Inyingi S. I. Brown, assured the family that the Government of Rivers State will not abandon them at this difficult time, saying that though the lives of the two youngsters cannot be resuscitated, efforts are being made to alleviate the travails of the family.

In his response, Mr. Ekpo, an indigene of Ebonyi State, thanked the government for coming to console them over the untimely demise of their sons, Emmanuel and Miracle Ekpo.

He explained that the young men, who were 17 and 16 years old, died after being swept away by a high current in the Eliogbolo Community canal.

The unfortunate incident occurred after their joint efforts in rescuing an old woman who was about to drown as a result of the heavy downpour on that faithful day.

Also speaking, a community leader in Eliogbolo, Chief Tigina Ihundah, called on the State Government to immediately come to the aid of the community by constructing the dilapidated internal roads which have been swept off by flood and erosion.

He accused some religious organisations in the community as being part of the community’s problems because some of them have built structures on the water ways, thereby causing heavy perennial flooding in 1the community.

Chief Ihundah appealled to the government to send palliative measures to alleviate the travails of the community.

The highpoint of the visitation was the presentation of a letter of invitation to Mr. Ekpo to attend a meeting in the Office of the Deputy Governor of Rivers State on Monday the 3rd of November 2025.

The Head of Service was accompanied on the trip by other top government officials, which include, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Dr. Iton Awani; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mr. Okereuku Alwell C.; and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Mr. Nwizug Gordon.
