The Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Hon. Chidi Lloyd, yesterday paid a condolence visit to the Rivers-East Senatorial Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Princewill Obodo, and his family following the death of his son, Anthony Obodo.
Anthony, 22, was allegedly shot dead along the AGIP-Rumueme axis of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area by a police officer attached to the Rumueme/AGIP Estate Police Station.
During the visit to the bereaved family at their residence in AGIP Estate, Port Harcourt, Hon. Lloyd condemned the reported killing of the young man, describing it as tragic and a significant loss to the Obodo family and the people of Rundele Ward 7 in Emohua Local Government Area.
The Council Chairman expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family and said he was confident that the leadership of the Rivers State Police Command would thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that the matter was handled in accordance with the law and the established code of conduct governing the Nigeria Police Force.
According to Princewill Obodo, Anthony was a young graduate awaiting his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up letter at the time of his death.
He alleged that his son was driving alone along AGIP Road in Rumueme, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, when a team of police officers attached to the AGIP Estate Police Station pursued his vehicle.
Princewill further alleged that, during the pursuit, one of the officers shot at his son after allegedly deflating a tyre of the vehicle, causing it to swerve off the road and hit pedestrians along the busy AGIP section of Ada-George Road.
The visibly emotional father said his son was not a criminal suspect and questioned why he was allegedly shot by officers of the same police division responsible for maintaining law and order in the area.
He called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, which he described as an alleged extrajudicial killing, and urged the authorities to ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law.
He thanked Hon. Lloyd for identifying with the family during their period of grief, describing the condolence visit as a demonstration of solidarity and sympathy with the bereaved family.
