The Rivers State Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Port Harcourt Branch, has rescued a woman living with mental health challenges and her newborn baby following an alleged attempt to unlawfully take away the infant in the Ogbunabali area of Port Harcourt.
According to a statement by the Ministry, the woman gave birth to a baby girl in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Ogbunabali, where some persons allegedly attempted to take the newborn away from her.
The Ministry said following a distress call, personnel from the Old GRA Police Station, the Ministry, and the President of FIDA, Port Harcourt Branch, promptly responded to the situation and ensured the safety of the mother and child.
The statement added that the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Lauretta Davies-Dimkpa, was represented by the Director of Social Welfare, Dr. Nwibana, who actively participated in the intervention and ensured that appropriate measures were taken to safeguard the mother and her newborn.
According to the Ministry, the intervention was in line with its mandate to protect vulnerable persons and promote the welfare, safety and dignity of women and children, particularly those exposed to abuse, neglect, exploitation and other forms of vulnerability.
The Ministry called on members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse, neglect, exploitation, trafficking or attempted abduction to the appropriate authorities.
It also urged members of the public to treat persons living with mental health challenges with compassion, dignity and respect, and to refrain from actions that could further expose them or their children to danger.
The Ministry commended the Nigeria Police Force, FIDA, Port Harcourt Branch, and other concerned individuals for their prompt response and support in ensuring the safety of the mother and her newborn.
