The Men on Ground Initiative, a pan-Niger Delta group, has joined family members and numerous admirers to celebrate the 57th birthday of Alabo Boma Iyaye, Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
As part of activities to honour the astute technocrat and philanthropist, members of the Initiative visited Ogu Town on Friday, and distributed school bags to pupils and students of public schools in the community.
Speaking on the decision to target schoolchildren, the leader of the group, Elekima Stanley Braide, said the initiative was designed to reach those who would benefit directly from the gesture and be inspired by it.
Braide said Alabo Iyaye had been a source of inspiration to the group, noting that the decision to support young people was intended to encourage them to embrace hard work, perseverance and the pursuit of their aspirations.
The schools visited were St. Martins Primary School and State Primary School, Ogu Town.
Speaking on behalf of the teachers, Onengiyeofori Airiyim, a teacher at State Primary School, Ogu, expressed appreciation to the group for the gesture.
Airiyim also called on other well-meaning individuals and organisations to emulate the initiative by reaching out to and supporting ordinary members of society, particularly children in public schools.
