Appreciates Kalabari People For Support

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has inaugurated the reconstructed 19.79-kilometre Buguma–Degema–Abonnema Road, describing the major transport corridor as a vital link connecting the three local government areas that make up the Kalabari Kingdom.

He said the completion of the road had brought an end to the prolonged challenges of travel delays, insecurity, and other difficulties previously experienced along the route.

The Governor stated this yesterday, while inaugurating the project, noting that the road had been in a deplorable condition before his administration awarded the rehabilitation contract in September 2024.

He disclosed that the completion of the project in record time fulfilled a personal commitment he made after witnessing the poor condition of the road during a previous visit to the area.

“It is a road that you must pass if you’re going to Abonnema. Because of its state, a lot of evil activities were taking place there. But to the glory of God today, I don’t think those negative acts can even be imagined or carried out along that corridor again.

“I made a promise to myself that day that even if it is remaining one week, we must make sure that we fix this road. Today, to the glory of God, the road has been fixed. I am happy that today, we are all here gathered happily that this particular dream has come to reality”, the Governor said.

He expressed appreciation to the people of the Kalabari Kingdom for their support and goodwill towards his administration, while stating his commitment to completing the Trans-Kalabari Road project.

“You have shown me so much love. Nobody can take that away. One particular project that cannot be denied is the Trans-Kalabari Road that we are doing. I want to beg you that if I cannot meet all your requests today, don’t worry, my successor will continue from where I will stop”, he said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Works, Prof. Temple Nwofor, disclosed that the Buguma–Degema–Abonnema Road project was executed in accordance with required state standards.

He explained that the road comprises a 50mm asphaltic binder course and a 50mm asphaltic wearing course, adding that the project included the complete rehabilitation of seven existing bridges across Ido, Abalama, and other neighbouring communities.

According to the Commissioner, other features of the project include the installation of streetlights, construction of concrete walkways and culverts, as well as reinforced concrete drainage channels ranging from 0.5 metres to 2.2 metres in width to enhance the roads and ensure effective drainage.
