The Rivers State Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has embarked on a safety inspection and sensitisation exercise aimed at promoting safe practices among gas retailers and preventing accidents within the metropolis.
Speaking during the exercise, the Director of Safety in the Ministry, Engr. Uche Osademe, emphasised the need for gas retailers and other operators to make the safety of lives and property a top priority in their workplaces.
Osademe made the call on Friday, during a routine safety inspection and sensitisation exercise focused on gas decanting activities within the Port Harcourt metropolis.
He said the exercise was designed to sensitise gas retailers on the need to comply with safety regulations and provide the necessary safety equipment to protect their lives, those of their customers and residents within their business environments.
The Director of Safety noted that gas decanting is illegal and prohibited, but expressed concern that the practice had become widespread, stressing the need for increased public awareness of the dangers associated with it.
He warned gas retailers to put adequate safety measures in place to prevent gas explosions and other hazards.
“Get all the necessary safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and sand buckets, and ensure that your shop is properly ventilated. Any gas retailer that fails to meet the required safety standards will have the facility sealed”, he warned.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers (LPGAR), NUPENG, Rivers State Branch, Nwanneoma Ihemeje, stressed the importance of protecting the lives and property of gas retailers, their customers and residents within their communities.
Ihemeje urged gas retailers to always put appropriate safety measures in place before commencing operations.
“Ensure you have all the necessary safety equipment before you start operation”, he advised.
Earlier, the Manager of Mobile PLC, Gas Filled, Silver Valley, Garrison Junction, Port Harcourt, Uchechukwu Jeremiah, explained some of the safety measures adopted at the facility to manage emergencies.
He said in the event of an emergency, the entire facility would be shut down, including the muster and exit points, while a gas detection system would identify leakages and enable operators to take immediate action.
Jeremiah added that the situation could be controlled by shutting down the relevant systems and securing the facility.
Facilities inspected during the exercise included Mobile PLC, Silver Valley (Addons), Garrison Junction, Port Harcourt, as well as selected gas retail outlets in Rumuokurushi, Worji and Rumueprekon.
